The Commission has established partnerships with leading institutions in both the US and UK.

The following institutions either fully fund or part fund Marshall Scholarships. If you are interested in any of these Scholarships you should mention this in your application.

Third Year Funding Partnership Marshall Scholarships

A Marshall Scholar can apply to undertake a Doctorate programme from the beginning of their award. The proviso is that should the Scholar decide not to complete the doctorate or failed to get third year funding, they would need to complete a lower research degree within the two years. Marshall Scholarships may be extended by the Commission for doctoral study, though not beyond the end of a third academic year. Third-year extensions are granted by the Commission on a limited basis, for strong academic reasons, subject to the availability of funds. Please note that third year funding is NOT guaranteed.

The following Universities offer partnership Scholarships for third year funding:

  • Oxford Marshall Scholarships: up to three third-year extensions may be granted by the University of Oxford to those pursuing a doctorate at Oxford.
  • Cambridge Marshall PhD Scholarships: third-year funding extensions may be granted by the University of Cambridge to those pursuing a doctorate at Cambridge.

NB Marshall Scholars attending any university in the UK, not just the partners listed above, can apply for third year funding from the Marshall Commission.

National Institutes of Health

Jointly funded by the Marshall Commission and the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, these Scholarships support research specifically in the subject areas of bioscience, medicine and related disciplines with a predominant application in bioscience. Applicants may study at any appropriate UK Institution.

To be eligible for the NIH Marshall Scholarship, applicants must first be selected as Marshall Scholars, applying in the usual way.  Applicants must also apply for the OxCam programme (whether or not they wish to go to Oxford or Cambridge) separately.  Details on how to do this can be found here.  The deadline for the NIH OxCam Programme is usually in November.

The Marshall Commission will pay for the first two years of the Scholarship and the Scholar will spend this time in the UK, and the NIH will pay for the third and fourth years and will give the Scholar the opportunity to research at NIH in Bethesda. Chosen Scholars will receive joint supervision from their British University and the NIH and will ultimately receive a doctoral degree from the British Institution.

Any Marshall Scholar who is selected for research in a Bio-medical/Science field can be put forward to the NIH for consideration.

For students interested in combined-degree MD/PhD training, stipend and tuition support is available from the NIH MD/PhD partnership training for those who enroll in the NIH-Marshall scholars program. Applicants admitted to the Marshall Scholars programme in the same year they are applying to MD/PhD programs are advised not to drop their MD/PhD applications if they are interested in the NIH partnership.
