General Information

Built on a heritage of brave thinking, UCL has always done things differently.
Our founders wanted a different and fairer way of doing things and we were the first English university to champion inclusivity, diversity and open mindedness – accepting students based on academic ability rather than background – allowing everyone the opportunity to go to university.
UCL was the first university in England to welcome students of any religion, and women on equal terms with men. The wold's first laboratory dedicated to engineering education was founded at UCL more than 180 years ago.
We have never been afraid to rethink the norms of education and research.
Our world-renowned multi-disciplinary academic community is grounded in pragmatic excellence and engenders an inquisitive, collaborative and forward-thinking culture which is committed to breaking down silos, and toppling ivory towers.
UCL cherishes curiosity and imagination and believes that the expansion of knowledge and scholarship is fundamental in the development and improvement of society.
We don’t work simply in response to policy and funding trends but because we believe that our excellence should be rooted in delivering societal benefit on a global scale. We look to generate practical impact, not just increase our global footprint.
