New Orleans native Ophelia Johnson graduated summa cum lade with a degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As an undergraduate, Ophelia was a leader of the National Society of Black Engineers and Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. She was named a UNCF/Merck Undergraduate Research Fellow and honored as a Goldwater Scholar and the Engineering Council of Birmingham’s Outstanding Undergraduate Engineer of the Year. Ophelia is finishing up a Master of Engineering in Design and Commercialization degree at UAB. She will further her studies in medical device design and bioprocessing at Imperial College London.
