Diego Atehortúa studied Art History at Rutgers. His research has focused on the cultural productions of Latin America and the Caribbean, principally since the long nineteenth century. 

He is particularly interested in visual, material, and religious cultures of the African diaspora and the afterlives of slavery, intersections between art historical inquiry and multimodal anthropology, objects and spaces of cross-cultural and inter-species exchange, and environmental humanities. 

Diego has held curatorial roles at the Zimmerli Art Museum, Museum of Latin American Art, and Guggenheim Museum, and presented research at the University of New Mexico and University of Chicago. In 2019, he was a Fulbright Fellow in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where he taught and researched at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Diego is the first Bienecke Scholar and Marshall Scholar of his alma mater. As a Marshall Scholar, he will study Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge and Visual, Material and Museum Anthropology at the University of Oxford.
