James Straw is a Marine Corps veteran completing his B.S. in Integrative Physiology with a minor in Biochemistry at the University of Montana. His research background spans clinical and non-clinical settings. At Children’s Hospital Colorado, he contributed to prospective clinical research on Osteogenesis Imperfecta and led a retrospective chart review investigating tyrosine kinase inhibitors in Pediatric Philadelphia Chromosome-Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He also conducted research supporting the U.S. Air Force as a research assistant in the Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism lab.

His five years of elite military service, including roles as an Infantry Squad Leader and Scout Sniper, cultivated a profound commitment to service that he transitioned to patient populations. He served as a Cabin Leader at Roundup River Ranch, a camp for children with serious illnesses, where he provided care and supervision to ensure campers had the safest, most enjoyable experience possible.

Ultimately, James is focused on leveraging his foundation in science and leadership skills to bridge genetics research with clinical application. As the next step toward his MD-PhD goal, he will pursue an MSc in Human Complex Trait Genetics followed by an MSc in Genomics and Experimental Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
