Hedley Lawrence-Apfelbaum is a senior at Amherst College, majoring in economics and political science and pursuing a certificate in International Relations. At Amherst, he has served as vice president of the Association of Amherst Students, the college’s student government. He also captains the men’s club rowing team, is a co-president of Amherst Students for Democracy, and has worked as a research assistant for an upcoming book on international law.

As a junior, Hedley was awarded the Samuel Walley Brown Scholarship for character, class leadership, scholarship and athletic ability. Hedley has interned in both houses of Congress and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration at the Department of Commerce. He has also conducted research on China-Latin America relations for the Inter-American Dialogue. Hedley is currently writing an honors political science thesis on the United States’ turn against trade liberalization and is interested in the international economic system and prospects for strengthened multilateral cooperation.

Through the Marshall Scholarship, Hedley intends to pursue an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford and to explore the UK’s policy and think-tank community. Hedley attended high school in Spain, is fluent in Spanish and French, and grew up in New York.
