Clara Tandar, from Salt Lake City, Utah, is a medical student at Brown University, where she previously earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in Bioengineering and International and Public Affairs. She is dedicated to accelerating interdisciplinary therapeutic and drug-delivery innovation to improve patient lives. At Brown, Clara integrates engineering principles with molecular and cellular biology techniques to develop hydrogel microparticles for disease detection and targeted therapeutic delivery. She has authored peer-reviewed publications in leading medical journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Nature Reviews Endocrinology, and The Lancet Digital Health, focusing on the treatment of oncologic and metabolic diseases as well as scientific communication. Clara’s research has been nationally recognized through awards such as the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the Amgen Scholars Program, and the American Association for Cancer Research Undergraduate Scholar Award. To maximize the impact of her scientific work, Clara led teams through the Brown Initiative for Policy that translated research findings and community perspectives into actionable healthcare policy solutions. She is also deeply committed to teaching and mentorship; Clara supports courses across Brown University’s chemistry, engineering, and biology departments as a teaching assistant and received the Herbert H. Uhlig Award in recognition of her work. In her local communities, she volunteers in elementary and high schools, where she designs and teaches hands-on science education programs. Clara plans to pursue a career as a physician-scientist, applying an interdisciplinary approach to therapeutic development and working to advance effective and accessible treatments for patients.
