Nate Carey, from Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, is studying for a BS and MS in Biotechnology at Pennsylvania State University, where he serves as President Emeritus of the Society for Industrial Biotechnology. He is also a founding member of a startup developing bioprocess optimization software, which will streamline production and reduce cost to consumers. As an Army ROTC cadet, he has pursued critical language studies in Morocco and an engineering internship in Japan. When not in uniform, Nate is a dedicated researcher, completing research projects in neuronal biochemistry, tissue engineering, and bioelectronics that have taken him to Germany and Switzerland. He has earned the Goldwater Scholarship, the Astronaut Scholarship, and the NASA Pennsylvania Space Grant in recognition of his research.

As a Marshall Scholar, Nate will apply to study for a DPhil in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Oxford.  After completing his studies, he plans to serve as a Biochemist Officer in the US Army Reserve and continue to work as a postdoctoral researcher in the US. His aim is to lead a lab developing functional organ analogs for cancer treatment and research.
