Hallie Baker
Hallie Baker is studying Archaeology at Boston University, where she will complete a joint BA/MA degree. Hallie applies her cultural heritage perspective to contemporary human rights issues. Bringing together ethics, politics, and the law, she focuses on the global trade in looted cultural objects, the respectful treatment of human remains, and the manipulation and destruction of cultural heritage for nationalist and political agendas. Through the Khmer Statuary Project, she is testing the ability of facial recognition software to identify looted Cambodian statues and aid in combating the illicit antiquities trade. She is also helping to conduct an inventory of the human remains in the care of Boston University, tracing the provenance of elements in the collection and writing policies that will ensure ethical future curation. As a Boren Scholar, she speaks Hindi and has studied abroad in India. She also has knowledge of Urdu and is learning Russian.
