United States Air Force Academy

Owen (Worthington, OH) is a senior at the Air Force Academy where he double majors in Aeronautical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. Called “the most well-rounded student in his class who is simply outstanding in all endeavors… academics, military leadership, flying, athletics,” he is both the Flight Commander for the 94th Flying Training Squadron, where he also instructs novice pilots in soaring, and second-in-command for his general cadet squadron. He also directs USAFA’s Spark, an innovation incubator, where he oversees a large budget and manages numerous projects. He has conducted extra- and intramural research on focused laser differential interferometry, hypersonic flight conditions, supersonic formation flight, crime density, and aerothermochemistry. A future test pilot, Owen is particularly interested in “greening” the US Air Force: he has led recycling efforts in his cadet squadron and restored local hiking trails and cleaned up nearby watersheds. He proposes to read for two taught Master’s in climate science and in advanced aeronautical engineering.
