Manny Uzobuife is a senior at the University of Notre Dame, studying Science-Business with minors in Chemistry, Science and Patient Advocacy, and Musical Theatre. He was born in Enugu, Nigeria, and immigrated to the Bronx, NY at 3 years old. Inspired by his upbringing in the Bronx, he is committed to harm reduction and pharmacology research. In the Lieberman Lab, he studies the analytical chemistry and public-health implications of fentanyl and xylazine test strips, and co-authored a publication in the Harm Reduction Journal. This informed harm reduction efforts in state departments across the US. He serves as the Co-Director for Health and Wellness in the Notre Dame Student Government, and is leading initiatives in collaboration with NGO, Naxos Neighbors, to expand access to overdose reversal tools on campus.

Manny also works to widen opportunities for fellow first-generation, low-income students pursuing STEM degrees. He has served as a mentor for nine students, and a TA for six STEM courses. He is also a bass in the Notre Dame Glee Club, an all-men’s choir, with which he has toured in nine countries and over a dozen U.S. states, and sung in venues including the Sagrada Familia, Verizon Hall, and Heinz Hall. In his free time, he enjoys weightlifting and is currently working toward being a member of the 1000-pound club. As a lifelong musical theater fan, he also looks forward to seeing productions at the West End.

At the University of Liverpool, he intends to pursue a MSc in Pharmacology and Toxicology and an MSc in Drug Discovery with Artificial Intelligence. He will then pursue medical school in the U.S., and integrate clinical practice and pharmacological research to expand access to effective, compassionate treatment for substance-use disorders.
