Isabel Rancu, from South Carolina, is a senior at Yale College completing a BS/MS in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry (MB&B) and a certificate in Data Science. Isabel is a member of the Cohen Lab at the Yale School of Public Health, where she is interested in applying computational methods to better understand the transmission and evolution of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in Eastern Europe. She was awarded the Alan S. Tetelman 1958 Fellowship for International Research in the Sciences to conduct bioinformatic research in the UK in 2025, as well the Yale College Dean’s Research Fellowship in 2024.

Outside of academics, Isabel is deeply involved in educational and community spaces. She is Co-President of Code Haven, Yale’s largest computer-science outreach organization, and teaches for Splash at Yale. She is also an undergraduate learning assistant (ULA) for MB&B and Statistics and Data Science department courses and tutors students in math, physics, and English. In addition, Isabel works as a Spanish interpreter for HAVEN Free Clinic, serves as a First-Year Counselor for her residential college, and is a Senior Interviewer for Yale Admissions. In her free time, she loves to bake, bike, and birdwatch.

As a Marshall Scholar, Isabel will pursue an MRes in Bioinformatics and Theoretical Systems Biology at Imperial College and an MSc in Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology at University College London.
