Richard is the Provost and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Liverpool.

He is a Fellow and Trustee of the Academy of Social Sciences and has held several advisory roles, including for the UN General Assembly, World Bank, UNHCR, UN-DESA, IPCC, International Organisation for Migration, the US National Academy of Sciences and CARE Britain.
