Sarah Kane, from Mendham, New Jersey, will graduate from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s degree in physics and a concentration in astrophysics. Her research interests focus on the structure and history of the Milky Way, and currently she is using machine learning to look for the oldest stars in the Milky Way. As a legally blind astronomy student, Sarah is interested in the intersection of science and disability advocacy. She has worked as an accessibility tester for the Space Telescope Science Institute and is a member of the Sonification World Chat. She is also the co-founder and co-host of the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation’s STEM Connections. Outside of academic and advocacy work, Sarah is the co-director of Science Olympiad at the University of Pennsylvania’s Urban Initiative, which offers after-school science programming in Philadelphia public schools, and is a Research Peer Advisor at her university. As a Marshall Scholar, Sarah will study at the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge, earning a PhD in Astrophysics.
