Max Teszler, from Newton, Massachusetts, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry, from Dartmouth College. During his time in undergraduate, Max was recognized with numerous awards in his fields of study, including two Francis L. Town Prizes for Academic Achievement, which are awarded annually to the most outstanding student in their sophomore year from the college’s departments of Biology and Chemistry, respectively. He was awarded the Phi Beta Kappa Sophomore Prize in 2021, which is reserved for the college’s sophomore students with the highest standing in their class following (at least) five terms.

Since 2021, Max has worked as an undergraduate research assistant in the Mary Lou Guerinot lab of Dartmouth’s Department of Biology, investigating the iron deficiency pathway through diverse molecular biology techniques. In 2022, Max received the Goldwater Scholarship, a national award given to students in STEM fields who plan to pursue research. An outdoor recreation enthusiast, Max was a member of Dartmouth’s Outing Club and has hiked the NH 48 (the state of New Hampshire’s 48 4,000 footer mountains).

As a Marshall Scholar, Max plans to continue his examination of plant genetics and food policy, particularly safeguarding plant growth and food supply against the effects of climate change. He will pursue a taught MSc in Plant Genetics and Crop Improvement at the University of East Anglia, followed by a taught MSc in Food Policy at City University.
