Carrie Barnett, 2010 Scholar, SOAS

Carrie BarnettI've had a busy and exciting year at studying for an MA in Islamic Studies at SOAS, University of London--where I'm staying on for a second year doing an MSc in Middle East Politics--balancing school work with exploration of all that London has to offer. SOAS, with its focus on studying the politics, societies and cultures of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, is constantly buzzing with activity and represents London at its multicultural best. I love living in the city where there's always something new to discover, and have particularly enjoyed participating in the monthly London Tap Jam, where I dance with live musicians at a jazz bar in Soho. But I also take every opportunity I can to explore the UK outside of London: two different trips with other Marshall scholars to Scotland have been a highlight of my time here, along with a weekend in Somerset organized by HostUK and trips to visit other Marshall Scholars in the cities where they live. I'm very glad I get another year here, because the first has gone by so quickly and there's so much more to see
