1985 Marshall Scholar Cindy Sughrue awarded OBE

1985 Marshall Scholar Dr Cindy Sughrue has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. This was awarded for services to dance.

Cindy graduated from Boston University and read for a PhD in English Cultural Tradition and Language at the University of Sheffield whilst on her Marshall Scholarship.  She was selected in the Boston Region.

Cindy Sughrue is Chief Executive/Executive Producer of Scottish Ballet. She joined the company in 2004 and has delivered a significant programme of organisational change, as well as a major capital development in the form of award-winning new national headquarters, which opened at the Tramway international arts centre in 2009. Cindy has worked at senior level within the cultural sector in the UK since 1990, with extensive knowledge of the performing arts, including an early career as a dancer. Cindy was born in Boston, USA, and received a first class honours degree from Boston University before coming to the UK in 1985 as a Marshall Scholar to undertake her PhD in Dance. Previous posts include Director of the Collective Gallery, General Manager of Dance Base, Scotland’s National Centre for Dance, and Head of Dance at the Scottish Arts Council. Cindy joined the Board of Scottish Ballet in March 2006 and has served on the Boards of Dance Base and New Moves International. She is a Governor of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, a Trustee of the Dame Margot Fonteyn Scholarship Fund and is Chair of the Board of the audience development agency Culture Sparks.
