Mr Alan Bookbinder

Alan Bookbinder has been Director of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts since 2006. The 17 trusts constitute the largest family philanthropic body in the UK, making charitable donations of over £100 million annually – in the arts, scientific and medical research, education, the environment and various social welfare fields.

 Alan was Head of Religion and Ethics at the BBC from 2001-2006.  He was at the BBC for 26 years, as a producer of documentaries, science and current affairs programmes, as the chief adviser on Editorial Policy, and as an executive coach. 

Since 2012 he has been an independent member of the Council of the Advertising Standards Authority.

After graduating in History and Russian at Oxford University in 1978, he spent two years as a Harkness Fellow at Harvard University. He studied for a year in the USSR, and has been a volunteer in Africa and a qualified soccer referee.
