The 1993 Marshall Scholars (pictured below) were the fortieth class of Scholars to be selected. The group was exceptional in containing, for the first time in the programme's history, more women than men. The forty represented twenty-eight colleges and universities in the United States and dispersed to nine universities around Britain. No single subject dominated, though the sciences were the most popular broad area. The majority of Scholars chose to study for a postgraduate degree. The preference of Marshall Scholars to use their award to study for an advanced degree has grown over the years. Out of the eighty-two Scholars registered during the academic year 1993/94, only twelve were pursuing a second BA.
