Fifty years later the basic structure of the Marshall Scholarships scheme remains intact, though there are now eight regional centres based in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Washington DC. The selection is made chiefly on a regional basis, supplemented by a number reserve candidates selected by the Advisory Council. Since 1989 the Chairman and one or two members of the Marshall Commission have represented the Commission on the Advisory Council and the selection of the new Scholars now takes place entirely in the United States.
The 1978 Marshall Scholars
The most dramatic change since the inception of the scheme has been the increase in the number of Marshall Scholarships. The number of new awards was increased to twenty-four in 1960, to thirty in 1973, and since 1991 up to forty Scholarships may be awarded.
