John Caughie is Professor of Film & Television Studies at the University of Glasgow. From 1999 to 2005, he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts, a Faculty which contains thirteen departments in the fields of arts and humanities. He is an active researcher in the field of film and television with current interests in film theory, television drama, and screen adaptations of Charles Dickens. He is an editor of Screen, a leading international journal in film and television studies published by Oxford University Press. He was co-editor with Charlotte Brunsdon of the series Oxford Television Studies which has published twelve volumes in the last six years. He convenes the Scottish Funding Council's working group on Knowledge Transfer and Cultural Engagement.

He currently serves on the Council of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the national Research Council responsible for funding research and postgraduate study in the Arts and Humanities. He chairs its Research Committee, its programme on ICT, and has particular responsibilities for a number of its Research Centre.
